ABSTRACT

There is increasing evidence that hypertension plays a role not only in in the pathogenesis of vascular dementia(VaD), but also in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The occurrence of AD is related to the age onset and course of hypertension, blood pressure level, and the types of antihypertensive drugs. And the relevant mechanisms include the structure and function of neurovascular units mediated by inflammation and angiotensin system, blood-brain barrier and brain parenchymal structure. Improving vascular risk factors and promoting cerebrovascular health may provide a possible method for prevention AD at such circumstances of absence of prevention methods for dementia based on relevant mechanisms.

Key words: hypertension, mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease
